Lake Superior Binational Forum

The Lake Superior Binational Forum is a cooperative effort between federal, state and provincial agencies, regional stakeholders and special interest groups to restore and protect the Lake Superior Basin. Created by the International Joint Commission, the forum is focused on pristine Lake Superior and an objective of designating the lake as a demonstration area where no persistent bioaccumulative substances would be permitted.

Programs include habitat restoration projects, protection activities such as special designations for protecting the Lake's pristine character, phasing out toxic substances and educational activities.

Lake Superior is well worth protecting. Please practise environmentally sound boating and camping:

  • When you go ashore, practice "no trace" camping techniques.
  • Unnecessary noise can be offensive. Slow down to reduce noise levels in populated areas and when other boaters are near.
  • Reduce the amount of potential garbage you bring on a trip by cutting down on food packaging before your cruise begins
  • It is illegal to discharge untreated sewage from a vessel. Make use of the pump-out service available at Buck's and other Lake Superior marinas.
  • When refueling, be careful to avoid blow back, and don't overfill. Leave room for gas to expand in the tank during hot weather and wipe up any spills.
  • Use a "bilge pillow" to absorb fuel or oil in the bilge. Water will not be absorbed, and cleaner water will be pumped form the bilge into the lake.
